Master of Education in K-12 English as a Second Language Specialist: Bilingual Education Teacher Licensure

The MEd in K-12 ESL Education Specialist: Bilingual Education Teacher Licensure degree program prepares educators who are pursuing licensure or certification as a teacher of students who are learning English as a second language. Candidates find coursework, including student teaching, designed to augment their professional knowledge, skills and aptitude.

The CDE and CCHE recognize the high quality of JIU’s MEd preparation degrees and have designated JIU as a state-approved program of teacher and principal/administrator preparation. For most states, graduating from an approved program of preparation is an important step toward achieving educator licensure or certification.

Candidates who complete this program:

  • Demonstrate their knowledge of student literacy development in reading, writing, speaking, viewing, and listening.
  • Demonstrate their knowledge of mathematics and mathematics instruction.
  • Demonstrate their knowledge of strategies, planning practices, assessment techniques, and appropriate accommodations to ensure student learning in a standards-based curriculum.
  • Demonstrate their knowledge of content.
  • Demonstrate their knowledge of classroom practice in order to successfully manage time, communications, and record keeping procedures that support and enhance student learning.
  • Demonstrate their responsiveness to the needs and experiences children bring to the classroom, including those based on culture, community, ethnicity, economics, linguistics, and innate learning abilities.
  • Demonstrate their knowledge of learning exceptionalities and conditions that affect the rate and extent of student learning, and are able to adapt instruction for all learners.
  • Are skilled in technology and know about using technology to support instruction and enhance student learning.
  • Recognize the school's role in teaching and perpetuating a democratic system.
  • Understand the relationships among the various governmental entities that create laws, regulations, and policies that determine educational practices.
  • Demonstrate their knowledge of first and second language acquisition and learning, including the nature of bilingualism and multilingualism, and the relationships and implications of each in the teaching of second language learners.
  • Demonstrate their knowledge of the foundations of the English language and the principles of English language acquisition, including linguistics, psycholinguistics, and sociolinguistics, and the contrast between the features and styles of English with other languages.
  • Demonstrate their knowledge of language teaching methodology and instructional techniques for teaching a wide range of linguistically diverse K-12 students founded on scientifically-based research and proven and effective applications; content based strategies; identification, selection, evaluation, design and adaptation of appropriate instructional materials; and child and adolescent literature from various cultures.
  • Demonstrate their knowledge of assessment practices and applications in the instructional process.
  • Demonstrate their knowledge of communication strategies and availability of resources.
  • Demonstrate their ability to self assess the effectiveness of instruction, as based on the achievement of students.
  • Demonstrate a high level of proficiency in the structure and use of a language other than English, including but not limited to reading, writing and oral communication skills.
  • Demonstrate the ability to effectively deliver content instruction in the student’s native or heritage language.
  • Demonstrate a high level of proficiency in English language use and functions, including, but not limited to: reading, writing and oral communication skills.

Who should enroll:

A pre-service teacher who is interested in ESL education; who is seeking initial teacher licensure; who holds a bachelor’s degree or higher from a four-year accepted institution of higher education; and who has completed an approved foreign language education program.
